Editor's Choice

Dr. Neal Rouzier gives valuable advice on how to “Look, Live and Feel Fantastic after 40” in his 2007 publication of How to Achieve Healthy Aging,”(WorldLink Medical Publishing). Rouzier clearly explains why everyone should replace their waning hormones. Anyone seriously contemplating the use of bio identical hormones, will find Dr. Rouzier’s discussion truly enlightening.

Hormone Review

Rouzier’s writing is straightforward and informative. While he shares stories of various patients and their remarkable results from using hormones, clearly his purpose is to direct the reader’s attention to the reasons why bio identical hormones are so crucial for maximum health benefits.

The author, himself a bio identical hormone user for many years, examines each of the main hormones and discusses their effects on the human body and their roll in disease prevention. He also discusses the degenerative effects people suffer when these hormones are in short supply.

Key Hormones

Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA, Thyroid and Melatonin are the main hormones that are addressed in this book. It is when these hormones decline, as they do with age, that people begin to suffer the ailments associated with aging – ailments which are completely unnecessary to experience, according to Rouzier.

For example, women who suffer hormone deprivation may ultimately “…lose teeth due to loss of mandibular bone support” (p. 32). Other degenerative conditions women may suffer due to hormone deprivation are:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Strokes and heart attack
  • Osteoporosis
  • Changes in cholesterol, skin and vaginal lining

“Unfortunately, most physicians fail to advise patients of loss of protection against breast cancer, and loss of hair, skin, nails, muscle, strength, energy and well-being” (p. 33) when they are post menopausal and not on bio identical estrogen replacement.

Thyroid Hormone Replacement

Many doctors agree that thyroid disease is the most under-diagnosed condition there is. Hypothyroidism, according to Dr. Mark Starr in Hypothyroidism, Type 2, (Mark Starr Trust, 2007) is nearly epidemic in this country.

Rouzier’s approach to thyroid hormone replacement seems to verify this. “Like all essential hormones, thyroid levels decrease as we age…Insufficiencies often go undetected. This problem is even more widespread than typically reported. One of the interesting things about thyroid supplementation is most patients experience significant improvement and feel much better once their serum levels are optimized” (p. 165).

Hormones are not Harmful

Rouzier stresses that bio identical hormones are not harmful and includes a literature review and bibliography with his comments in this book. Any questions or doubts a reader may still have after reading Rouzier’s book, will readily be assuaged in this section.

Many women who may be reluctant to again trust the medical profession after the brouhaha with the WHI’s study of Premarin/Provera, will find that Rouzier’s medical experience and practice demonstrates that bio identical hormones are not hazardous to one’s health. Indeed, many who use these products vouch that bio identical hormone supplements, along with exercise and good nutrition, are the key to healthy aging.

Rouzier's clinic is in Palm Springs, California, and accepts patients from across the country.
